ISO 14001 was first issued in 1996 and it was the first global standard addressing the requirements for a management system approach to proactively protecting the environment.  It immediately became popular with organizations throughout the world and these organizations saw immediate benefits.  In 2004, ISO 14001 was revised to improve compatibility with ISO 9001 and to clarify the links between the sections within standard.

This whitepaper provides each requirement detailed in ISO 14001 as well as the value provided by the requirement.  Additionally, a checklist is provided with several actions that organizations can consider to provide cost savings as well help to protect the environment.
