Environmental issues are not going away. National and international regulations and laws at all government levels are continually being created, revised and generally made more stringent. Compliance to these laws and regulations is often a full-time job for one or more personnel in each organization. Compliance audits take up valuable time and consume limited resources. Conformance to the ISO 14001 standard may offer one source of relief from all of this. It is the opinion of the authors that those firms that can objectively demonstrate conformance will be subject to less intrusion from outside compliance audits than those that can not. Certification and registration is one of the most effective ways to provide this objective evidence. Today, the choice is yours. Tomorrow, the choice may not be available. No matter what your position may be, it is a safe conclusion that every firm will benefit from learning about ISO 14001. So the question should not be if you will start, but when you will start.
