What was the need for developing OHSMS?
The history of OHSMS began with federal governments enacting laws aimed at providing protection of all workers regarding safety and health risks associated with workplaces. After these laws were put in place, organizations realized that the laws only told companies what they had to comply with, and there was no guidance on how to achieve and maintain compliance.
To meet this need, various management systems standards were developed that provide clear-cut requirements for establishing, implementing and maintaining a management system that proactively leads to compliance with applicable laws. OHSAS 18001 has emerged as a standard of choice.
