The market for specialty papers in North and South America was 5.68 million tonnes in 2015, and grew to 5.88 million tonnes in 2019 at a CAGR of 0.8%. There was a decline in security papers, due to major countries switching from paper to plastic for their currency paper and to competition from electronic transactions, which resulted in shrinking markets for cheque and ticket paper.

The US is the dominant market for specialty paper, accounting for 65% of the volume in the region. The US specialty paper market is somewhat saturated and there are few opportunities for growth in such a fully developed economy. The expected increase in overall tonnage between 2015 and 2025 amounts to a CAGR of only 0.35%, but due its volume, this represents 29% of all the increased tonnage in the region. Brazil has more
opportunities for growth due to its developing economy, and it accounts for 28% of the regional ten-year growth.
